Advanced Research Complex: Green Building Excellence Award Finalist

_K2C0202-FINALISTThe University of Ottawa Advanced Research Complex (ARC) was a finalist at this year’s Ontario Green Building Excellence and Leadership Awards. The awards recognize “outstanding new projects and programs in Ontario which go above and beyond the normal scope of sustainable best practices” and were presented by the Canada Green Building Council at the CaGBC Ontario Awards Gala on November 1, 2018.

The 14,860m2 building (including 6,002m2 of labs and 2,312m2 of office and support space) serves as a teaching and research facility in photonics and environmental analysis. In addition to offices, classrooms, clean rooms for laser testing, laboratories, and specialized spaces devoted to research into inert gases and the analysis of glacial specimens, the building is home to Canada’s only accelerator mass spectrometer.

We achieved a sustainable design by employing durable, regional, low-VOC and recycled materials; incorporating innovative wastewater and stormwater management; and utilizing high-efficiency mechanical, electrical, and building envelope systems. The ARC is heated and cooled by central services via underground connection to the Physical Plant Building, and uses passive strategies for thermal control and natural daylighting. Roofs, hard-landscaped surfaces with high reflectivity, and soft landscapes reduce the heat island effect and moderate rainwater run-off. ARC diverted 99.7% of its construction waste during construction, and used 89% FCS certified wood for
doors, millwork, etc. Our design responded to the energy use challenges posed by its chemical lab spaces, which require 100% of the room air to be fully exhausted to the exterior. By exhaust air heat-recovery, chiller-based heat recovery, and interconnecting the building’s three hydronic loops, the building saves 1000 tons of CO2 annually.

The Advanced Research Complex achieved LEED Gold.
